My Blog – How To Be Happy If… – is designed to help us enjoy and share my passions – arts, humor, creativity, education, and ways to be happy – sometimes in the face of negative situations.
I love the arts and education. As a performer and audience member I get a thrill out of singing and musicianship, dancing, acting, and comedy. I love writing books (like Queens of Comedy, based on my interviews with legendary comedians like Lucille Ball, Carol Burnett, Joan Rivers, Phyllis Diller, etc.), musicals (El Senor X – a Broadway/Latin Romantic Comedy Thriller www.elsenorx.com), songs, (CD “Keys of Love” http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/drsue), and award-winning plays, screenplays, poetry. As an educator, I love sharing skills and information, empowering my students to have successful lives, and learning from them. As every teacher knows, “when you become a teacher, by your pupils you’ll be taught.” (from the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical The King and I).
Doing what you love is a key to happiness. It’s important to choose and value what matters to you. The “if” in “How To Be Happy If…” is meant to acknowledge that sometimes choosing what matters means sacrificing what is non-essential, not dwelling on regrets or focusing not on what’s missing, but rather, celebrating the positive aspects of what we do have. When we weigh our choices, we need to weigh them right.
I also include the word “if” because I believe that happiness is a path – we’re always making choices, straying from the path and (like B’rer Rabbit) trying to get out of the briar patch and into a sunny meadow. “If” is also meant to acknowledge that we’re bound to encounter frustrations, failures, and assorted stresses. If we want to be happy, we need to use our creativity, smarts, humor, support system, faith, or whatever gets us through the night…and rise with the sun.
